 May I once again ask for volunteers who are willing to assist in this crucial aspect of the restoration of the public celebration of the Mass Sincere thanks are due to our stewards and cleaners who give so generously of their time. Without them the church could not open, and there would be no public Masses. Please do show them your appreciation and gratitude when you come to church, particularly by treating them with courtesy and respect. It is also important to follow their instructions, as they ask no more than what is necessary for the parish to be permitted to open the church.

The Gospel for this Sunday is made up of three sayings of Jesus that give us norms for important aspects of the Church’s future: fraternal correction among the faithful, the power to bind and loose given to the Apostles and their successors, and the effectiveness of prayer in common.

Jesus’ message does not make people sinless; but it does ask us to love one another despite our defects and mistakes. A clear demonstration of this love is the mutual help given through forgiveness and correction. With this first teaching, Jesus invites each of us to be a merciful judge who shows understanding towards anyone who has harmed us in any way. As Saint Josemaria said, “To practice fraternal correction—which is so deeply rooted in the Gospel—is a proof of supernatural trust and affection. Be thankful for it when you receive it, and don’t neglect to practise it with those around you.” Pope Francis stressed that fraternal correction prevents “that bitterness of heart which brings anger and resentment, and which leads us to insult and aggression. It’s terrible to see an insult or taunt issue from the mouth of a Christian … To insult is not Christian.”

The Fathers of the Church saw fraternal correction as a noble act of friendship, and drew practical consequences based on Jesus’ words. For example, Saint Augustine admonished the faithful: “we ought, then, to correct our brother out of love; not with the wish to do him harm, but with the affectionate intention of achieving his improvement. If we do it in this way, we will fulfil the precept very well.

Regarding Jesus’ second saying (v. 18), the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches: “The words bind and loose mean: whomever you exclude from your communion, will be excluded from communion with God; whomever you receive anew into your communion, God will welcome back into his. Reconciliation with the Church is inseparable from reconciliation with God” (no. 1445). After speaking about reconciliation between brothers, Jesus gives his Apostles the power to reconcile the faithful with the Church. This power is ordinarily exercised by confessing one’s sins to the confessor, who has received this power from the bishop, successor of the Apostles.

Pope emeritus Benedict XVI said: “Personal prayer is of course important, indeed indispensable, but the Lord guarantees his presence to the community—even if it is very small—that is united and in agreement, because this reflects the very reality of the Triune God, perfect communion of love.” When we pray in union with others, we not only move God to grant us what we ask for. We also receive the gift of the presence of God himself among us.

The Church teaches us  in the Second Vatican Council that : “Christ is always present in His Church, especially in her liturgical celebrations. He is present in the sacrifice of the Mass, not only in the person of His minister, the same now offering, through the ministry of priests, who formerly offered himself on the cross, but especially under the Eucharistic species. By His power He is present in the sacraments, so that when a man baptizes it is really Christ Himself who baptizes. He is present in His word, since it is He Himself who speaks when the Holy Scriptures are read in the Church. He is present, lastly, when the Church prays and sings, for He promised: ‘Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them’ (Mt 18:20).”

Reflecting a little further, today’s gospel reading from St Matthew comes from a collection of Jesus’ teachings applicable to life within the community of the Church, as it awaits the coming of the final Kingdom. In the passages that precede this one, Jesus has warned against arrogance on the part of those called to be leaders: ‘the one who makes himself as little as this child is the greatest’; he has pronounced a terrible judgment on those who lead astray ‘these little ones who have faith’. Matthew also includes here the parable of the lost sheep, as indicating the generous zeal that should be shown by leaders in the community. This reference to those who have gone astray leads into today’s reading. It describes the manner in which these people are to be dealt with within the Church community. Clearly, the community Matthew is writing for has developed procedures to be followed in such cases, and they see themselves as acting in accordance with the Lord’s own mind. When we recall the authoritative spirit that was taken for granted by those with leadership roles in the ancient world, we recognise how the listening and dialogue of these procedures reflect the fraternal love that was taught by Jesus – and recalled by Paul in our second reading.

In these procedures, we see the origins of the sacrament of reconciliation that is an essential part of the life of the Church during its time of pilgrimage. It was not a question of some private offence committed against the one who admonishes the wrongdoer. In referring to the need for ‘two or three witnesses to sustain the charge’, this procedure echoes Jewish background of the community , citing a prescription of the Old Testament (Deut 19:15), thus making it clear that it is a question of serious and public faults. When these procedures, calling the wrongdoer to conversion, have failed, this person is to be excluded from the community. We know from comments of St Paul concerning such cases, that this exclusion aimed to help the wrongdoer find forgiveness: ‘Do not treat them as enemies, but warn them as believers’, Paul writes (2 Thess3; cf. 1 Cor 5). Being welcomed back to share in the life of the community – especially the Eucharist – was the sacramental sign of reconciliation with God. Note that st. Matthew follows these procedural instructions with a second reference, in his gospel, to the power to ‘bind and loose’ in God’s name. This time it is given to the Church community, acting through the ministry of those who carry on the leadership role of the apostles. As we said, the sacramental sign of reconciliation with the Lord is being received back into the Church community.

‘The Son of Man has power to forgive sins’, Jesus declared (Mk 2:10). The reconciliation available in the life of the Church is the reconciliation he brings to the world. The words with which our reading ends, though brief, have immense importance for us, as we seek to understand and enter more fully into the mystery of the Church’s common life. You come together ‘in my name’, Jesus tells us. In the biblical tradition, these words have a great depth of meaning: they imply our identification with the Lord through our baptism, and to the fact that he continues to be present in the world of our time.

Church restoration and celebrating Pugin and Pugin

The initial part of the work has begun. The car park behind the church is fenced off and consequently will be unavailable for use. I would remind parents of children at the school that the car   park will not be available for “dropping off/picking up children. It is not at present immediately clear how the forthcoming work will impact the church being used for Mass. When it becomes necessary the public celebration of the Holy Mass will perforce have to take place in the parish centre. Funerals when we are able to open our churches for them to take place (which will in large measure depend on the availability of volunteers) will be celebrated in the church in Broadway

Public Mass

We wish to ensure a phased introduction to the Public celebration of the Holy Mass. These notes will serve to illustrate the work which has been done so far, and to thank all who have made this possible by volunteering their services.

The capacity at Masses in Evesham will be 58  and in Broadway 26 assuming people are from single households and allowing two persons per pew. The number will be slightly more if parents are present with children or if there are present several from the same household able to occupy one pew. We will operate as instructed by the diocese on one metre plus social distancing and thus will require everyone to wear a face covering or a mask.


Please remember the Sunday precept remains suspended and parishioners are encouraged to come to Mass in either Broadway or Evesham on weekdays wherever possible thus leaving the limited space available on Sunday for those who cannot come on other days. You will already realise that with the limited numbers it would be impossible for everyone to come on Sunday. Information will be provided as to what is required by everyone who uses the church for the celebration of Mass. There are now seven public Masses being celebrated between Evesham and Broadway. Thus even using the minimum capacity in both churches 58 in Evesham and 26 in Broadway This gives a possibility of at least 290 per week in Evesham and 52 in Broadway. Given the fact that the presence of members of the same household(and children from the same household increase these capacities it is possible at this time it is possible for everyone to come to Mass once a week.

Donations and Collections during this time update.

We have been asked by Parishioners (apart from those who already support the parishes by bankers order) how they can make donations/and continued financial provision for the parish while Masses are not being celebrated publicly.

This is available for Evesham on the Website and appears in orange. It is hoped to provide a similar “button” for Broadway.( I understand that some have found some difficulty with this. We will look into it this week)

Standing Orders

These can be set up on line for anyone who uses internet banking. Please phone the presbytery or send an email for more information. Fr Christopher will give the contact information for the person who deals with standing orders and Gift Aid. And she will provide the necessary details to set up a standing order. This applies whether one uses internet banking or not.


Weekly offerings (envelopes and loose) whether for the first or second weekly collection may be kept at home or if preferred please place envelopes (which are numbered) for both first and second collections through the presbytery letter box in Evesham. If placing none numbered ordinary envelopes (namely what would normally be placed loose in the collection bags) please indicate whether this is for the First or Second collection. Those coming to the public Masses are encouraged to use the buckets provided for the offertory collections.

Sacramental preparation

There are no plans at present to begin preparation for First Confession, Holy Communion and Confirmation for next year.  Nor is it yet know when those already prepared will receive these Sacraments.
